Long Term Care is a long term care insurance plan that helps pay for care if an insured person becomes functionally dependent, due to a loss of two or more Activities of Daily Living or a cognitive impairment. The product is primarily designed for pre-retirees and active retirees who want to ensure they won’t be a burden on their families. Long Term Care provides a ‘pool’ of long term care funds, which are drawn down during a claim as monthly Care Benefits are paid. These benefits help you pay for home or facility care if you’re unable to care for yourself.
Functional dependence means that you require substantial assistance with two of six Activities of Daily Living or substantial supervision because of cognititive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
The six Activities of Daily Living are:
• Bathing
• Eating
• Dressing
• Toileting
• Transferring
• Maintaining continence
